Marie-Joëlle Zahar, associate professor at the department of political science at the University of Montreal, provides the scientific direction of the Francophone Research Network on Peace Operations (ROP) since 2009. Her current researches focus on the process of peace consolidation, especially on the impact of initiatives that promote democracy and the dynamics of post-conflict violence. Dr. Zahar has been a visiting scholar in many institutions, including the Centre for International Security and Cooperation at Stanford University (1998-2000), at the Munk Centre for International Studies at the University of Toronto (2000-2001), at the Centre for the Study of Modern Arab World at the Saint Joseph University in Lebanon (2007-2008), and the University Jean Moulin Lyon-2 and the Institut d’Études Politiques de Lyon in France (2007). She was also a consultant for various public and private organizations such as the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and the government agencies and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in Canada and abroad. Winner of numerous awards and honors, Dr.Zahar has a Ph.D. in political science (cum laude) from McGill University in 2000.
